He may have married the widow of William Barclay of Kerkou, as in 1384 Alexander Barclay his son is styled brother and heir of a John de Abernethy.3
He is styled in a safe-conduct of 1363 'valettus' to David II. He had grants from the King of the lands of Balgeveny and others in Kinghorn on 15 February and 15 March 1368-69. In 1381 he had a safe-conduct to pass through England on his way to the Holy Land.4
