He is designed ' frater Petri de Graham ' in his brother's charter of Balnebuth to the Abbey of Newbattle. Probably through a misreading in an early Macfarlane copy of this charter, Douglas names the brother ol Peter, and presumed ancestor of the noble family of Montrose, John, and confounds him with the John above mentioned, who obviously belongs to a later generation, and this has been followed by all subsequent Peerage writers. No other mention of Alan has been traced, but it is assumed that his son was William de Graham.3
