He was illegitimate. His mother may have been Janet Erskine. He was legitimated together with his half-brothers 17 April 1479.4
He is the ancestor of the earls of Castle Stewart in Ireland.5
If he was legitimate, it is difficult to explain why he received with his brothers letters of legitimation on 17 April 1479, and also how his descendants' claims to the throne as sole male descendants of King Robert II were disregarded completely on the death of King James V.6
