In 1893 he had serious economic problems and did not succeed in his business. After the divorce he had frequent contact with his daughter Louise, but less with Katherine. In 1919 he was skipper on a wessel. He visited Norway in 1909 and again in 1921. From 1922 he lived with his daughter Louise and later moved to Seattle with her and her family.13
