At the time he got married (1898) he worked with The Stern Clothing Co. on the corner North Ave and Larrabee Street. Before that he worked with Charles Ahlsueda as a tailor. When his wife died in 1904, John moved with the two small girls to his sister Petra. She lived with her children in a beautiful flat 1087 W North Ave (6302 Halsted Str) near Kedzie Ave, opposite the park. Petra was a good mother to the girls, calling her "mother". John himself was called "Uncle John" as Petra's children did. John worked at this time in Englewood on the corner of 63 and Halsted Street and had a very long distance to go.13
He lived the first years with his second wife, Rosa, in 830 West 65 Str, but had 1914 moved to West Place 667 in Chicago where they lived for many years until the last world war. From 1929 John and Rose took care of brother Conrad until he died in 1933. From 1 November 1940 John lived with Helen in 1455 Belmont Ave, Graceland 8161. He moved in 1945 and lived then with his son John in 8243 Kimbark Ave until he in 1952 had to move to a nurcing home. After the war was finished in 1945, he sent several packages to his sister Doris and her family in Norway where there was scarcity of food and everything the first years after the war. John's last journey was in July 1947 when he visited his brother Conrad's wife Henriette in Detroit and his brother Fred in Bridgeport.14
