Styled Lord Boyd during his father's lifetime, a Commissioner of Supply for the shires of Ayr and Dumbarton 13 May 1685, 28 May 1686, 27 April 1689, and 7 June 1690. He succeeded his father, March 1692, but only survived him two months, dying 20 May following, aged about twenty-nine.10
