He was his parents' youngest son and succeeded his brother, and was served heir to him in Gaithope and Traquair 4 July 1605, previous to which he was styled of Kirkland of Innerleithen and of Schillinglaw. He was a lieutenant in the King's Guard under his brother Sir John.16
