He entered the College of Douay 31 August 1657, but left it and became a soldier. He was accused along with his brother James, who was acquitted, of the murder of Alexander, son of the Rev. John Gregory, minister of Drumoak, on 7 March 1663. He escaped from prison before trial. There were further proceedings against him for the crime in 1667, but he obtained a remission in 1682.3
