On 15 July 1594, on the resignation of his uncle, Lord Altrie, he obtained a Great Seal charter of the lands of Benholm. On 20 May 1605 he sold these lands to John Gordon of Cairnburrow. In October 1590 he seized the Abbey of Deer, then owned by his brother, the Earl Marischal, and remained there for six weeks. On being dislodged by the Earl and Lord Altrie he fled to the castle of Fedderat, where eventually a truce was made with him. He married, but left no legitimate issue.3
