Personal Info
He was a master mariner and indweller in Scalloway towards the end of the 16th century. He was also owner of the 24 merks land of Berrie, and the 1 1/2 merks in Houll, lying on the west side of Scalloway Bay. By him the shipwrecked sailors of the El Gran Grifon, the flagship of the Spanish Admiral, Don Juan Gomez de Medina, were conveyed from Shetland to Dunkirk in 1588. He is also said to have been tacksman of Fair Isle. On 30th June 1597, he is ordained among other Shetland proprietors by the Privy Council to find caution to the extent of £1000 Scots for the observance of good rule within his lands.9
