He attended Ribe school for two years from he was nine, together with his brother Melchior. He later attended Randers school for three years while living with his grandfather Erik Lange at Dronningborg. Thereafter he served his uncle Hak Holgersen for four years, including in the war against Sweden, then the king for two years, and then the elector of Brandenburg for three years, and then four years in the war against Hungary.8
